PART 2: Current State of Law

The Current State of Law: Freedom of Press      According to The US Courts,  the First Amendment protects freedom of speech. These freedoms protect the rights to the following:  Not to speak (specifically, the right not to salute the flag), o f students to wear black armbands to school to protest a war, t o use certain offensive words and phrases to convey political messages, t o contribute money (under certain circumstances) to political campaigns, t o advertise commercial products and professional services (with some restrictions), and t o engage in symbolic speech, These freedoms do not protect the following: T o incite imminent lawless action, t o make or distribute obscene materials, t o burn draft cards as an anti-war protest, t o permit students to print articles in a school newspaper over the objections of the school administration, o f students to make an obscene speech at a school-sponsored event, and o f students to advocate illegal drug use at...

PART 1: Current Issue

Marion County's Newspaper News          Our current issue is about an incident that happened in Kansas, where law enforcement raided a local newspaper publishing building, and collected "evidence" such as computers as much more. This soon became a matter of whether or not the newspaper company's rights were violated. According to the article,  The raid followed news stories about a restaurant owner who kicked reporters ...

PART 3: Judgement; Who is right? Who is wrong?

Gio's Opinion     I believe everyone is to be held accountable, the newspaper team for taking in illegally confiscated news in the first place, the victim for being a drunk driver, which is horrible, and the police department for having no valid warrant to raid and collect "evidence". But If i had to choose one of them, I'd choose the police department, what they did was a community shaking event that should not have happened in the first place, and to stay silent about the situation doesn't make the issue any better. I am a firm believer and advocate for our freedom of speech, and believe that we should be protecting it from anyone violating it. The current state of the freedom of speech/press is slowly being violated by our government, as well as governments across the world, according to Freedom House . This situation is proof and if we don't stand up for our rights, we might as well remove it from the constitution.  Obreana's Opinion I believe the Mar...
