PART 1: Current Issue

Marion County's Newspaper News

Our current issue is about an incident that happened in Kansas, where law enforcement raided a local newspaper publishing building, and collected "evidence" such as computers as much more. This soon became a matter of whether or not the newspaper company's rights were violated. We will be discussing the different perspectives to inevitable have a consensus on who was right and who was wrong.

This part of the blog will be typed from the victims (newspaper company POV) perspective. According to The Pitch, local law enforcements seized computers, cellphones and reporting material from the Marion County Record Office, the newspaper's reporters, and the publisher's home. Meyer believes that there is a connection from the raid to a previous situation they've been in previously. According to the article, The raid followed news stories about a restaurant owner who kicked reporters out of a meeting last week with U.S. Rep. Jake LaTurner, and revelations about the restaurant owner’s lack of a driver’s license and conviction for drunken driving. "A confidential source contacted the newspaper," Meyer said, "and provided evidence that Newell had been convicted of drunken driving and continued to use her vehicle without a driver’s license. The criminal record could jeopardize her efforts to obtain a liquor license for her catering business."

This part of the blog will be typed from the judges perspective, who's name is Laura Viar. Eric Meyers, the owner and publisher of their news, believes that the search warrant, signed by Marion County District Court Magistrate Judge Laura Viar, has violated a federal law that gave them protection from searching and seizing materials from journalists. According to the article, Viar didn’t respond to a request to comment for this story or explain why she would authorize a potentially illegal raid.

As for the victim, she feels extremely violated of her privacy. This resulted from someone stealing her mail to obtain the information of her license number. “The victim shaming culture is sad and an injustice,” Newell wrote. “I have received false reviews, nasty hateful messages and comments and borderline threats. The sheer amount of defamation and slander is overwhelming.”

This part of the blog will be typed from the resident's point of view. Marion Residents and other countries are infuriated with the police as they raided the office of the Marion newspaper company in Kansas as well as the home of Jaon Meyer. This has upset people all around the country as the people feel their right has been taken from them. Jaon Meyer who was the co owner of the Newspaper passed away the day after getting raided and residents want justice for her death as well as her son Eric Meyer believes the raid contributed to her death.
