PART 3: Judgement; Who is right? Who is wrong?
Gio's Opinion
I believe everyone is to be held accountable, the newspaper team for taking in illegally confiscated news in the first place, the victim for being a drunk driver, which is horrible, and the police department for having no valid warrant to raid and collect "evidence". But If i had to choose one of them, I'd choose the police department, what they did was a community shaking event that should not have happened in the first place, and to stay silent about the situation doesn't make the issue any better. I am a firm believer and advocate for our freedom of speech, and believe that we should be protecting it from anyone violating it. The current state of the freedom of speech/press is slowly being violated by our government, as well as governments across the world, according to Freedom House. This situation is proof and if we don't stand up for our rights, we might as well remove it from the constitution.
Obreana's Opinion
I believe the Marion Police are the only ones who should be held liable because they raided the Marion Newspaper with only three out of the four warrants signed and the warrant they used to raid was not valid. It was also said that there was, "insufficient evident" to proceed with the raid. It was proven that the Marion Newspaper did not violate The Privacy Act of 1974 meaning they did not take the information from Kari Newell illegally as they just used a website to search up their information, which was open to the public. This is important because Kari Newell was claiming they had taken their information illegally encouraging police to raid the newspaper company. This goes against the Marion Newspapers First Amendment right being freedom of press. Jan Meyer's home, the co owner of the newspaper company also got raided illegally and residents and her son Eric Meyer believe the stress from the raid caused her death the next day. Freedom of press was extremely violated and we should be protecting citizens, not falsely accusing them or raiding their homes with no valid warrants.
Emily's Opinion
Although my peers believe that police were on the wrong, I beg to differ. The newspaper company stole information illegally but stealing the victims mail just so they can put her in the hot seat. If the newspaper company obtained information the right legal way, then this fiasco could have been avoided. The police were just doing their job, of course they took matters in their own hands however it's common to see this type of action with a police force. Not a newspaper company. I believe the newspaper company got away with this crime since the police already have a bad rep. Including, it gives journalism a bad rep for the newspaper company stealing information.
